    Recommended Photo Gear
Here is a list of photo equipment and accessories that I recommend for wildlife photography in Yellowstone. Since I shoot Canon, that's what's listed below. I would recommend much of Nikon's superb equipment as well, including the D3x, D3s, D700 and 200-400 f/4 lens.

    Canon 1D Mark IV*

    Canon 5D Mark III*

    Canon 7D*

    Canon 500mm f/4 IS*

    Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS*

    Canon 24-70mm 2.8*

    Canon 17-40mm*

    Canon 1.4x teleconverter*

    Additional Recommendations:

  • Additional prosumer bodies (60D or equivalent)*
  • Canon 100-400mm IS*
  • Canon 10-22mm (for crop bodies)*
  • Gitzo GT1531 CF tripod*
  • Wimberley Gimbal Head*
  • Really Right Stuff BH-55 ballhead
  • Acratech Ultimate Ballhead (for smaller lenses)*
  • Nexto DI storage device*

  • *- items found in Max's bag

    Also in the Bag:

  • Polarizer
  • Neutral Density Filters
  • 50+ GB worth of memory cards
  • Pixel Pocket Rocket
  • 4-6 batteries
  • Wonpro power bar & cord
  • Lens cloth, Pen brush
  • Rain Covers
  • Vinyl Makeup Brush (sensor cleaning)
  • Hand warmers (winter)
  • Tape
  • Bags:

My bags for Yellowstone vary depending on my mode of transportation. If I am driving to the park, I prefer to pack everything in my Think Tank Airport Security bag. If I'm flying over on smaller prop planes that have limited space onboard, I prefer my LowePro Trekker AWII, which fits underneath the seats. For hiking in the park, I prefer to carry my gear in a pouch system. Think Tank's Skin System works best for me:

  • Skin Belt
  • Pixel Racing Harness
  • Skin Double Wide
  • Skin Chimp Cage
  • Skin 50
  • Skin Strobe
  • Two RU Thirsty pouches
