BEST PHOTOS OF 2008: What an interesting year. The first eight months of 2008 were highlighted by small pockets of activity—comprised mainly of two trips to Yellowstone in January and May—surrounded by long periods of time away from my cameras. Big things were happening away from photography that altered the landscape of my personal and professional lives, so it was probably best that things didn't really heat up until autumn. At that point, the University of Washington asked me to take on a larger role as their lead photographer for athletics, and my fall schedule was filled with football, basketball, volleyball and soccer games.

But I still found time to travel. I set aside time to meet friends in Yellowstone and the Tetons in late September, followed by a short stop in Utah where I hoped to photograph a wild mountain lion. Success there and a puma encounter in Costa Rica at the end of November rounded out what has been a spectacular thirteen months of wild cat sightings (starting in Africa in late 2007). Perhaps in 2009 there will be time to publish a book detailing all the feline adventures. In the meantime, enjoy the Best of 2008 gallery!
